12 Common Causes of Earache You Shouldn’t Ignore

The Common Cold

The common cold is one of the conditions that cause earache without an ear infection. The earache occurs because of the body’s excessive mucus when a person has a cold. When mucus collects in the middle ear, the virus or bacteria from the nose and throat passes through the Eustachian tube, which puts pressure on the eardrum, leading to pain and inflammation. The mucus can also build up in the Eustachian tube itself. Because the tube is narrow, the fluid or mucus buildup can easily block it, causing the person to feel discomfort and pain in their ear. Sinusitis is also one of the causes of earaches.

The condition will improve naturally in a few days. However, a few home treatments can relieve the earache. The person can do steam inhalation. They can also apply a heat or ice pack over the affected ear to ease the swelling or pain. They can also try sleeping on the unaffected ear’s side. Resting and drinking plenty of fluids will loosen the mucus and help the person recover faster. Adults can take decongestants as cold treatments. For earache, doctors may prescribe OTC pain relievers.
