Allergic Reactions
Another common contributor to dry eyelids is the potential for allergic reactions. There are various types of allergies and potential allergens depending on the individual, but the root of the matter is the body’s attempt to protect itself from a harmless foreign substance. It’s a frustrating condition, as the body is essentially trying to protect itself from a perceived threat that is harmless for most people.
The result is a variety of symptoms, including coughs, rashes, fevers, and more. Dry eyelids are one of the symptoms, as a skin allergy can cause dry and irritated skin. While the symptoms will go away on their own, there is a chance for dry eyelids to develop into a bacterial infection of the eye if you aren’t careful. The pollen season is especially troublesome, as you will constantly be exposed to pollen while outside.
For allergies with more severe reactions, medication is mandatory. Otherwise, most people wait out the symptoms and do their best to avoid allergens in the future. Something as simple as avoiding the food in question is enough for those with food allergies. That said, constant exposure to allergens could lead to allergy resistance.
