What Could Cause Double Chin? 11 Possible Triggers (List)

Other Health Conditions

A double chin rarely indicates ill health. Often, it has to do with getting older, having specific genes, or having certain habits that don’t necessarily impact overall well-being. However, double chins can suddenly develop, and underlying medical problems might cause this.

One sign that a medical condition may be to blame for the double chin is that it may appear unexpectedly and may not be caused by a change in diet or degree of physical activity. For instance, swollen lymph nodes may result from underactive thyroid function. The neck enlarges, resulting in the growth of a goiter.

Cushing’s syndrome is another medical reason for double chins. It develops when the body consistently produces excessive amounts of the hormone cortisol. Cushing syndrome can cause unusual facial roundness, weight gain in the middle and upper back, arm and leg thinning, easy bruising, and stretch marks. Other conditions linked to double chins are sinus infections and renal problems.
