15 Causes & Common Triggers Of Dizziness (You Should Know)

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Carbon monoxide (CO) can be found in fumes produced by kerosene heaters, furnaces, gas ranges, vehicles, and portable generators. It is also produced by burning wood and charcoal. CO begins to build up when these sources are in enclosed spaces, and those present in these areas might get poisoned. Breathing CO can be fatal, as well.

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 430 people in the United States die annually from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, about 50,000 people in the US go to emergency departments because of accidental CO poisoning.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, weakness, and chest pain. People under the influence of alcohol or sleeping may die even before having these symptoms. Immediate medical care is required when a person suffers from CO poisoning. Treatments include IV fluids, a ventilator, and oxygen.
