Sexual Dysfunction
Sexual dysfunction is common among patients with diabetic neuropathy. This results from nerve damage caused by high sugar levels and poor blood flow. From a psychological perspective, these sexual dysfunctions affect the confidence and relationships of younger patients.
Men with diabetic neuropathy may experience decreased blood flow and poor nerve signaling, resulting in loss of sexual desire. In a phenomenological study conducted in 2017, diabetic patients narrate how neuropathy made it difficult for them to have erections and experience orgasms. Younger patients are more likely to overcome these dysfunctions than older patients. In addition, the data shows that more than 50% of sexually active patients found out about their diabetic neuropathy because of their sexual dysfunctions.
Women also suffer from nerve damage, diminishing their ability to lubricate and relax during sexual intercourse. Patients also reported having issues with achieving orgasm and experiencing pleasure. In addition, 85% of female patients complained about vaginal dryness and lack of desire. Pregnant ladies experiencing these symptoms should consult their doctors immediately to receive proper medications.
