Oral Drugs and Other Medication
It’s relatively common for medical professionals to prescribe oral drugs and other types of medication. Some medicines can help the pancreas release insulin, while others may prevent the excessive release or production of glucose. Still, others block stomach actions, like intestinal enzymes breaking down the consumption of carbohydrates by slowing down their absorption or making tissues responsive to insulin. Typically, the first medication for diabetes is Metformin, regardless of the diabetes type 1 or 2.
Another drug type, referred to as SGLT2 inhibitors, could be necessary. Their primary purpose is to ensure the safety of the kidneys from reabsorbing the filtered glucose into your blood. Instead, glucose is eliminated via the urine. This medication class also modulates the transport proteins of sodium-glucose within the nephron, which is the kidney’s functional unit, unlike the SGLT1 inhibitors performing essentially similar functions on the intestinal mucosa. In canagliflozin studies, it’s been found to aid in controlling blood sugar and body weight and reducing diastolic and systolic blood pressure.
