Frequent Infections and Slow-Healing Sores
Beyond blurry vision, fatigue, weight loss, and excessive thirst, a high blood glucose level can impair the body’s ability to heal itself, even minor wounds naturally. As such, those who have diabetes may experience frequent infections and slow-healing sores. For this reason, it’s highly recommended that those with diabetes check their bodies regularly for any wounds, especially on the feet, and ensure they’re adequately treated or potentially risk serious complications. It’s also worth looking into your footwear to check if the poor fitting is causing any calluses or cuts.
Diabetic neuropathy is another reason to be observant of wounds because this condition makes it much more challenging to feel whether or not you’re injured. Again, it may sound strange, but the pain isn’t necessarily bad because it lets us know if there’s something wrong. Without it, you may not realize that you’re hurt and fail to get your wounds treated.
