Inflammatory Bowel
Inflammatory bowel or IBD refers to idiopathic conditions caused by dysregulated immune responses to intestinal microflora. Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are the two primary types of IBD, and both are identified by weight loss, fatigue, abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea. For some, it’s merely a mild condition. But for others, it can be debilitating and result in life-threatening situations. While there isn’t a specific diet that can treat or prevent the disease from occurring, there are diet strategies that can help control its symptoms.
Some recommendations are to follow diets with low residue to avoid diarrhea and abdominal pain. Foods that could elevate stool output, like fresh vegetables and fruits, caffeinated beverages, and prunes, should be minimized. Concentrated sweets that decrease the water amount the intestine pulls, resulting in watery excrement, should also be taken out of the diet if possible.
