Slows Down Neurological Diseases
The levels of phosphocreatine in the brain decrease due to various neurological conditions. Thus, creatine can reduce or slow down the progress of certain diseases because it plays a crucial role in increasing phosphocreatine levels. In a study on mice with Huntington’s disease, the brain restored phosphocreatine by 72 percent through creatine, while the control group stored only 26 percent.
Phosphocreatine’s restoration further reduced cell deaths by 25 percent. Animal studies are promising, and experts believe that creatine supplements may also help treat diseases like epilepsy, ischemic stroke, and brain injury.
In another research, creatine has shown its potential in fighting off amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or ALS. It is a condition in the nervous system wherein nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain are affected, leading to muscle control loss. The result showed that motor function and muscle control improved and the survival rate extended by 17 percent.
Further human research is necessary to highlight the benefits of creatine against other neurological diseases. But experts believe the supplements may defend against these conditions when combined with conventional medicines.
