Weight Loss
Collagen supplements have been believed to promote weight loss. However, only a few studies have observed the link between collagen supplements and weight loss. Still, the results of existing research are promising regarding reducing weight. For instance, collagen supplements were found to increase satiety or feeling full, which helps weight loss by reducing hunger. This effect might be due to collagen being a protein.
A 2020 study showed that high-protein diets suppress ghrelin, which is known as one of the hunger hormones. Another study published in 2008 highlighted that increase in protein intake also increased thermogenesis, a metabolic process in which organisms burn calories to produce heat. This study also noted that following such diets stimulates protein anabolism.
Meanwhile, evidence suggests that collagen reduces adipocyte (fat cells) accumulation. For example, one study found that collagen from fish called skate could reduce human fats. Similarly, research in 2018 showed anti-obesity effects in mice after taking collagen peptides found in skates.
