Reduces Risk of Heart Disease
Omega-3 fatty acids have been linked to reducing the probability of cardiovascular diseases. Because of this, many people opt for supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids like fish oils. However, studies have shown that cod liver oil contains twice the amount of omega-3 fatty acids than ordinary fish oil.
Because of its omega-3 fatty acids content, cod liver oil is proven more effective in combating heart diseases. It does wonder in helping the body fight these diseases. The omega-3 fatty acids found in cod liver oil reduce triglycerides and lowers blood pressure. A study conducted among patients with high cholesterol and blood pressure showed that participants who took cod liver oil supplements for two weeks had shown 15-30% lower triglycerides and normal blood pressure.
Omega-3 fatty acids also increase the high-density lipoprotein. High-density lipoprotein absorbs cholesterol and delivers it back to the liver. The liver flushes the cholesterol from the body, lowering the risk of heart disease. Studies also show that omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of plaque buildup that forms in the arteries. Plaque buildup shrinks the arteries, which leads to heart attacks or strokes.
