Pharmacologic Drugs
Patients with liver cirrhosis may be prescribed one or more drugs to ensure superior results. They are recommended to manage the root cause of cirrhosis and prevent further damage along the ling. In addition, medications may also be prescribed to treat symptoms and related medical conditions.
For instance, cirrhotic patients with chronic viral hepatitis B and C will significantly benefit from antiviral medications. Many medications are used to manage hepatitis B and C, including Interferon being the most widely used among cirrhotic patients. Combining Interferon and Ribavirin delivers promising results for individuals with hepatitis C.
Adefovir, Tenofovir, and Lamivudine are used to treat hepatitis B infection. Depending on the severity of their condition, patients may be advised to take these drugs, usually administered orally once daily for 12 months or more.
For patients with liver cirrhosis caused by an autoimmune disorder, corticosteroids are advised. Corticosteroids can help suppress attacks on the liver. In addition, they help alleviate liver inflammation, preventing the worsening of liver cirrhosis. High doses of prednisone may also be recommended but should not be taken for a longer period. Instead, lower doses of prednisone are typically used with azathioprine.
