11 Symptoms & Sign Of Cirrhosis (Don’t Ignore)

Painful and Swollen Abdomen

Ascites is a condition characterized by abnormal fluid build-ups in the abdomen or belly. This results from portal hypertension or too much pressure in the liver’s blood vessels. Low levels of albumin, a kind of protein, also cause abnormal swelling of the abdomen. These conditions are common among patients suffering from liver-related diseases like cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis slows down and eventually blocks the blood flow in the liver. This increases pressure in the passageway between the liver and the intestines. Because of these complications, fluid builds up between the two layers of the peritoneum (a sheet of tissue that covers the abdominal organs). Over time, the patients suffer from a swollen abdomen, causing extreme pain, loss of appetite, and discomfort.

Recent studies have shown that 80% of the cases of ascites are seen among patients with severe cirrhosis. It is usually accompanied by back pain, difficulty sitting down, constipation, indigestion, and shortness of breath.
