11 Symptoms & Sign Of Cirrhosis (Don’t Ignore)

Loss of Sex Drive or Lack of Libido

The liver is responsible for breaking down sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone. However, too much scarring prevents the liver from processing these hormones, leading to estrogen or testosterone build-up. The messed-up level of sex hormones in the body leads to loss of sex drive, lack of libido, and other sexual dysfunctions.

A study shows that more than 50% of adult patients with cirrhosis experience several sexual dysfunctions. For example, male patients suffer from testicular shrinking, abnormal hair growth patterns, breast enlargement, and loss of interest in sexual activities. On the other hand, females experience pain and abnormal enlargement of breasts, low sex drive, and irregular periods. Another study showed that 75% of male patients with cirrhosis have erectile dysfunction, swollen scrotum, and shrunken testicles.

On the other hand, a recent study shows that nonalcoholic liver diseases do not affect patients’ sexual function, desires, and performance. Further comparative studies are needed to make a more concrete connection between liver conditions and sexual functions.
