The 12 Causes of Chapped Lips You Should Be Aware Of

Poor-Quality Lip Balm

Lip balm (also called lip salve) is a chemically processed substance made of wax used to relieve, moisturize, and help the skin on the lips that are chapped, dry, and cracked. It also relieves pain from cold sores and stomatitis (inflammation in the mouth). The lip balm helps create a thin protective layer on top of the lips that shields them from the sun’s heat and possible allergens and maintains moisture in the mouth.

However, there are lip balms that worsen the already damaged lips. Research reveals that certain ingredients like phenol, menthol, camphor, and others can irritate the lips. Even natural ingredients such as peppermint and eucalyptus oil have properties that can trigger irritation. Some balms contain humectants (hyaluronic acid and glycerin) that can worsen the dryness of the lips. Some people also want to make their lips attractive by making them plumper and poutier. However, using heat-inducing and potent oils like cinnamon, unknowingly damages the delicate area of the lips and results in infection. Consult a dermatologist if the lips feel irritated after applying lip balm.
