Addresses Gastrointestinal Disorders
Aside from colic and diarrhea, chamomile tea can also help relieve other problems in the gastrointestinal tract. It has been used in many cultures to treat stomach spasms, upset stomach, flatulence, gastrointestinal irritation, and ulcer. Chamomile tea can soothe the stomach and relax the muscles responsible for the movement of food through the intestines.
Researchers from Egypt and Saudi Arabia collaborated on a study published in the journal “Medical Science” that confirmed the anti-ulcer effects of chamomile, sesame, and flax oils. These oils serve as a prophylactic measure versus stomach ulcers caused by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Moreover, a study conducted on the commercial preparation STW5 (Iberogast), which contains various herbal extracts, including chamomile, shows that it has the potential to reduce gastric acidity. Its effectiveness in doing this is comparable to that of a commercial antacid, but it is more capable of inhibiting secondary hyperacidity. STW5 also demonstrates the ability to restrain serum gastrin levels, lowering gastric acid production. It has an anti-ulcerogenic effect, which comes with the stimulation of mucin secretion, the release of prostaglandin E, and the reduction of leukotrienes.
