Weight Gain and Obesity
Since cellulite is made of fat, most would logically think that having more fat in the body means having more materials for cellulite formation. Becoming overweight is not necessarily the cause of cellulite formation, though. Even lean people can also have cellulite.
However, obesity and being overweight certainly make cellulite appearance more noticeable. While more studies are needed to establish the fatness and cellulite relationship, anyone can objectively observe the difference in cellulite formation among people with sedentary lifestyles and those who have become lean because of their regular physical activity and less food consumption. For example, working women in impoverished countries rarely have noticeable cellulite because of their constant physical exertion and lower food intake.
Still, the science is not clear on whether or not fat accumulation is responsible for cellulite. A study published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, shows interesting findings. It says that weight loss reduced cellulite in some overweight women but worsened cellulite in others. These results add to the confusion but do not rule out the connection between fat and cellulite formation.
