Topical Anesthetics

Topical anesthetics are commonly used to relieve pain and itching from insect bites, minor burns, and other superficial skin irritations. However, these medications can also be effective in treating canker sores. Often, the pain and discomfort of canker sores are caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes.
Topical anesthetics work by temporarily numbing the affected area, providing relief from pain, and helping to speed up the healing process. In addition, some topical anesthetics also contain ingredients that help to reduce inflammation. When used as directed, topical anesthetics are safe and effective canker sore treatments.
They are available in gel, cream, or lozenge form and can be found in most pharmacies. Apply the medication to the sore as directed by the package instructions. Benzocaine and lidocaine are two common topical anesthetics used to treat canker sores. They are typically applied to the affected area four times daily to numb the pain. Benzocaine products are generally well tolerated. However, the most common side effect is mild irritation of the skin. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and consult your healthcare provider.
