Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is a condition that causes the narrowing of the spinal canal. It can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, leading to pain, numbness, and weakness in the calf and feet. Spinal stenosis is most commonly seen in older adults. However, it can also be caused by injuries, tumors, or birth defects.
Walking or standing can aggravate calf pain caused by spinal stenosis. However, the pain often disappears when the individual is resting. In addition to calf pain, individuals with spinal stenosis may also experience difficulty balancing. This is due to the compression of the nerves that control balance and muscle function. If you experience any of these symptoms, you must see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Spinal stenosis can be treated with medication, physical therapy, or surgery. In addition, when severe calf pain is caused by spinal stenosis, a spinal cord stimulator may be implanted to help relieve pain. Most people with spinal stenosis can live normal, active lives with proper treatment.
