What Could Cause Burning Eyes? 12 Possible Triggers (List)

Fatigue or Eye Strain

Visual strain or Asthenopia is when the eye becomes too tired from overexertion on the day to day basis. The eyes are used nonstop and are one most overused organs in the body. People use their vision from daytime until nighttime. Different spectrums of light shift according to the surroundings to which the eyes adjust and adapt. When there is eye strain, there is internal pain in the layers and surface of the eyes, inflammation and redness, dry or excessive production of tears, blurry vision and strong light sensitivity, involuntary twitching of the eyes, and extreme and recurring headaches and back pains.

Several reasons cause eye fatigue: prolonged reading without giving the eyes a break, reading while in motion (such as in vehicles or any transportation) or in dark areas (poorly lit rooms), lack of proper sleep, overexposure to computer screens and other technological devices, direct contact to the glare of the sun or any bright lights (like lamps, lasers, and flashlights), driving for an extended period of hours (especially in bumpy roads) and stare at bright car lights on the opposite side of the road, and usage of outdated eyeglasses.
