Optic Neuritis
Optic neuritis is the medical term for the inflammation of the optic nerves, the part of the nervous system responsible for transmitting messages from the eyes to the brain. The swelling usually affects only one eye, but it can also happen to both eyes.
A distinctive symptom of optic neuritis is the blurring of vision that usually happens when body temperature rises, like when taking a hot shower or steam bathing. Heat worsens the swelling of the optic nerves and amplifies other symptoms like pain in the affected eye, difficulty distinguishing colors, and an abnormal reaction to the bright light of the pupil in the affected eye.
Optic neuritis can happen to anyone regardless of age. The exact cause of this condition is yet to be determined. However, it is associated with viral infections that trigger an autoimmune attack on the optic nerves.
This condition may only require rest to go away on its own. However, if the symptoms persist for several weeks, it is advisable to see a healthcare professional. Vision blurring and distortions should resolve within a week if the condition is benign.
