Wet Macular Degeneration
A chronic eye disorder, wet macular degeneration is a problem in the macula that brings about vision blurring and the appearance of a blind spot. It is the more severe form of dry macular degeneration, which is quite common among people older than 50.
Aside from blurring eyesight and blind spots, other symptoms are associated with wet macular degeneration. They are visual distortions like the bending of straight lines, the need for brighter light when reading or working on something detailed, a slower ability to adapt to dimmer light conditions, and the decreased perception of colors. The condition also makes it difficult for those affected to recognize faces.
The exact causes of wet macular degeneration are yet to be identified, but experts point to abnormal blood vessel growth from the choroid to the macula as one of the likely reasons. In addition, fluid buildup in the back of the eye is also a likely cause.
Wet macular degeneration can lead to vision loss. However, when detected early and given the proper treatment, blindness can be avoided. It is also possible to reverse the blurring, blind spot, and other vision problems if the condition is addressed soon.
