Diabetes
Diabetes is another systemic condition that commonly causes blood in the eye. A constantly high blood sugar level weakens the blood vessels in the entire body, leading to spontaneous rupture.
The high sugar levels in the blood blocks circulation to the blood vessels in the retina or that part of the eye that sends signals to the brain and detects light. Over time, those blood vessels become susceptible to leaking fluid or bleeding, causing blood spots in the eye. The eyes may grow new blood vessels to compensate for the blocked blood vessels, but they do not work well and may only leak and bleed easily.
Like hypertension, the best way to tackle the blood in the eye caused by diabetes is by managing the underlying condition. While there is no absolute cure for diabetes, significant lifestyle changes and certain medications could help slow down the progression of its symptoms, giving the patient a better chance at living a better quality of life.
