Too Much Fructose
Fructose is a type of monosaccharide or simple sugar. It is also known as “fruit sugar” since it is mainly found in fruits such as dates, pears, apples, prunes, and figs. It is also found in honey, sugar cane, and vegetables like asparagus, onions, and red peppers. Fructose can be consumed as a natural sugar when people eat unprocessed fruits. It can also be considered as added sugar when people drink beverages and packaged foods with added crystalline fructose or sucrose.
Fructose consumption is generally safe, and the experts set no recommended daily consumption. However, some people may experience a hard time digesting and absorbing large amounts of fructose. As the stomach tries to break down and digest food and drinks rich in fructose, it produces a lot of gas. This excess gas will then find its way back up to the esophagus, causing the person to burp or belch many times.
People who have trouble absorbing and digesting fructose are advised to monitor and limit their intake. Avoiding food with high levels of fructose is the best way to prevent discomfort and pain.
