Insomnia and Sleeping Problems
Insomnia is a type of sleep disorder that makes it hard for people to fall and stay asleep. As a result, people with insomnia sleep late, wake up too early and feel tired all the time. This can result from poor sleeping habits, sudden changes in schedule, mental health disorders, physical illness, medications, and sudden and too much exposure to stressors.
Anecdotal and historical evidence highlights the possible roles of insomnia and other sleeping disturbances as symptoms of bed bug bites. Bed bug infestation may be a stressor that can affect the host’s emotional and psychological health. For instance, a study interviewed people who worked at a pest control center. According to their testimonies, victims of bed bug infestation shows psychological distress, and most of them resorted to dangerous methods (like using fire) to get rid of the bed bugs. A psychological study also analyzed the comments of people on bed-bug-related websites. Most victims showed signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Victims and survivors of bed bug infestation are having difficulty sleeping. Thoughts of the invisible insects living in their sheets and rooms give them a nightmare. It develops a deep fear of sleeping, leading to insomnia, sleep apnea, and severe anxiety. Some victims’ interviews showed that sleeping difficulty happened even before they discovered that bed bugs were present in their rooms. Waking up with strange insect bites can make a person anxious, depriving a person of sleeping soundly at night.
