Allergic reactions can manifest through swelling and irritation of the skin. They are faulty reactions of the nervous system against substances, chemicals, food, or materials that are not really harmful to the body. Allergens can range from food like eggs and peanuts, to particles like pollens, and dust, to simple products like soap and perfume. These allergens can be, swallowed, touched, or inhaled by a person to trigger an allergic reaction. The interesting thing about allergies is that they have different effects and intensities for different people. Some sneeze and cough, while others swell and develop a rash.
An allergic reaction to latex condoms and spermicides can make the penis swell during and after intercourse, leading to balanitis. A patient could also develop balanitis as an effect of uncontrolled and untreated allergic reactions from harsh soaps, body wash, and detergent. In these cases, taking antihistamines can help. Antihistamines are prescribed medicines to relieve several symptoms of allergies, including hives, fever, rashes, itchiness, and inflammation. Some examples of antihistamines are diphenhydramine, cetirizine, loratadine, fexofenadine, and levocetirizine.
However, it would be best to consult a doctor or health care provider before taking any medication, especially if a patient has pre-existing health conditions like diabetes, heart problems, and kidney stones.
