Rebound Tenderness
If a person is concerned that the symptoms are indications of appendicitis, they could place their hand on their lower right abdomen. They could apply gentle pressure on the area. If there is pain after releasing the pressure, they feel rebound tenderness. And this feeling is an indication of an inflamed appendix. If they feel this, it is best to see a doctor quickly.
Rebound tenderness, or Blumberg’s sign, is the presence of pain when the person or the doctor removes the pressure from the abdomen’s lower right side in the appendix region. Rebound tenderness indicates a general inflammation of the peritoneum (peritonitis). The peritoneum is the membrane lining the inner abdominal wall. It covers the abdominal organs, and its inflammation, when caused by appendicitis, can result in incidental infection and peritoneal irritation.
Peritonitis is the swelling and redness of the abdomen or belly lining. It is often due to an infection from a burst appendix or a hole in the bowel. The condition needs immediate medical attention because a burst appendix can lead to infection as the appendix contains toxic waste materials.
