Pacifier/Thumb Sucking
To suck on one’s thumb is the habit of a very young child, similar to using a pacifier. The pattern eventually disappears as people grow up, though it can cause issues while children still suck their thumbs. Thumb sucking causes a bacteria buildup around the mouth, leading to angular cheilitis and other similar problems. Thumb sucking can also potentially cause misalignment of the teeth in growing children, which is why it’s a good idea to help your kids kick the habit as soon as possible. While thumb-sucking is not a particularly bad habit, it can end up causing a variety of issues if you let the habit continue for too long. One of the more unfortunate conditions that could arise is a lisp or a speech impediment due to the constant pacifier/thumb sucking.
Thumb sucking can also alter the properties of the roof of the mouth. It can lead to that part of the body being more sensitive, which could further cause pain and discomfort. Letting children suck their thumbs is okay, but make sure they don’t keep the habit too long.
