Injections
There are two different types of injections for acne treatments – steroid injections and corticosteroid injections. Steroid injections help improve the appearance of the skin with acne scars. In contrast, corticosteroid injections can help soften and flatten acne scars, especially if the patient has a keloid or hypertrophic type of scars.
Some treatments show the best results for raised acne scars if both fluorouracil or 5-FU and corticosteroids are injected. A dermatologist may do this treatment only at the clinic, which is done once every few weeks for better results.
Interferon also used to treat cancer, is said to be effective for acne scars treatment. Fluorouracil (5-FU), a chemotherapy drug, can also treat elevated acne scars. Dermatologists may recommend acne scar surgery if the scar doesn’t show better results after receiving the 4th injection.
