Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism is a health condition occurring in people whose thyroid glands do not release enough hormones into the bloodstream. It is also called an underactive thyroid and is one of the possible causes of acanthosis nigricans.
Hypothyroidism can have various causes, from conditions that directly impact the thyroid to secondary sources that may make the pituitary gland fail, which keeps it from sending signals to produce enough amounts of thyroid hormones. An underactive thyroid may result in several conditions, including tiredness, weight gain, anemia, and the presence of dark skin patches in different parts of the body.
Like diabetes, hypothyroidism could be life-threatening, and people should not set aside the appearance of dark patches of skin throughout the body associated with it. While acanthosis nigricans may not be dangerous, hypothyroidism could have severe symptoms such as heart failure. Therefore, doctors must rule out if it is hypothyroidism that’s causing acanthosis nigricans so they can treat it properly, avoid the symptoms from coming forward, and keep the condition from worsening.
