Family History of Diabetes
The family health history is essential to determine whether one is predisposed to a disease or not. Such is a factor in the diagnosis of acanthosis nigricans and, in the process, of diabetes.
Since acanthosis nigricans can be closely associated with the development of diabetes, any family history of diabetes may be causing its appearance. If the father, mother, brother, sister, or even other close relatives have been tackling the condition, there is a greater chance that the patient will have it and all the symptoms that come with it, like the darkening of the skin in certain body parts.
While acanthosis nigricans, although unsightly, may not be as severe as diabetes, people should take it seriously, especially if the family has a family history of diabetes. The skin patches could be an indicator that the blood sugar levels are spiking or that there is an overproduction of insulin, which could eventually lead to diabetes.
