Itching Around the Veins
For anyone dealing with varicose veins, the itching can be incredibly bothersome. While the condition is painful and unsightly, the itchiness associated with varicose veins can make them even more difficult to deal with.
There are a few reasons why varicose veins might cause an individual to experience itching around the affected area. When blood flow is restricted, as it is in veins that have become varicosed, the skin around those veins can become dry and irritated. This is because blood normally flows through those veins and contains nutrients and oxygen that keep the skin healthy. When blood flow is restricted, nutrients and oxygen can’t reach the skin, leading to dryness and irritation. In addition, when blood flow is restricted, fluid can build up in the affected area and cause the skin to stretch, leading to itching.
Fortunately, there are some things an individual can do to help relieve the itchiness associated with varicose veins. It is recommended to keep the affected area clean. Use mild soap and cool water to avoid further irritating the skin. Use a moisturizer or lotion to help keep the skin hydrated. Taking an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen can also help reduce inflammation and itching.
