Red Eyes
Red eyes can be a symptom of upper respiratory infection. The most common upper respiratory infections are the common cold and the flu, spreading through the air in droplets from coughs and sneezes. In addition, some people may experience allergic conjunctivitis, which is caused by allergens, irritants, or even pH imbalances in the eyes that can irritate it.
All three conditions may cause red eyes that burn, itch, water excessively, or produce a foreign body sensation. In addition, certain indicators indicate that red eyes are a sign of upper respiratory infection.
In addition to redness and irritation, one should look for crusting or discharge around their eyelids and watering in both eyes or just one. For example, those with allergies may have irritation limited to just one eye, while those with an upper respiratory infection will experience symptoms in both eyes.
