What Causes Upper Arm Pain? 14 Causes To Consider

Bursitis

When fluid builds up in the bursa, the protective sac that protects the crevices between the bones and tissues of joints, a condition known as bursitis may set in. This causes painful inflammation in the joints that protect your bones, tendons, and muscles. Most cases of bursitis are in the shoulder, which directly impacts the upper arm. The acromion, the shoulder blade’s highest bony tip, and the rotator cuff tendons have a bursa positioned subacromial in the shoulder to function as an absorber. These tissues facilitate the coordinated movement of muscle and bone of the shoulders, including the upper arm. Shoulder bursitis in this area may cause discomfort that comes on abruptly or gradually. Depending on the severity, the pain and stiffness might be subtle, intense, or moderate.

Injuries or overuse of muscle due to repetitive movement can trigger bursitis. This condition is more common in professions and sports that require frequent shoulder motion. Bursae may become swollen and irritated from continuous rubbing and other movements such as exercises. Overhead exercises promote friction between bones and tissue, causing sharp or pinching pain. Also, patients may have disruptive sleep when sleeping on the painful side. Steroid injections, shoulder bracing, and rest may all be helpful in alleviating its symptoms.
