Dehydration
It’s a well-known fact that caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it causes the body to lose water. Caffeine is absorbed quickly and has a short-lived effect. For this reason, people often consume caffeine periodically throughout the day. Although caffeine is generally safe in moderation, it can cause side effects, one of which is dehydration.
Caffeine causes the body to lose water through increased urination. When people consume too much caffeine, the kidneys begin to work harder to filter out the caffeine. This causes more water to be excreted from the body through urine.
In addition, caffeine can also lead to increased thirst and reduced fluid intake, which can further contribute to dehydration. The diuretic effect of caffeine is most pronounced when consumed in large amounts or when someone is not accustomed to its effects. However, even moderate consumption of caffeine can cause mild dehydration.
Dehydration can cause a few different symptoms. The most common symptoms are thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and headaches. More severe cases of dehydration can lead to a dry mouth, sunken eyes, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, confusion, and fainting.
