Bruises
A bruise is a form of injury that can lead to skin discoloration because the blood from the damaged cells within the skin collects near the epidermis or skin surface. This results in black and blue marks after the incident. Bruises can lead to thumb pain, especially when the incident happens near the fingers or hand. Typically, the constricting of blood is accompanied by pain due to the narrowing of blood vessels, which blocks blood flow.
There are several reasons why bruises occur; one is when a person is engaged in vigorous exercises, such as athletes and weight lifters. Another reason is the occurrence of accidents. Examples of accidents include bumping into a bedpost and falling.
Bruises in the thumb fall into the grade one category of thumb sprain. Pain or tenderness is also felt around the base of the thumb. It is often experienced with swelling and the inability to move it.
