IT Band Syndrome
IT band syndrome stands for iliotibial band syndrome, a condition affecting the tendon called the iliotibial band. When the iliotibial band is irritated and swollen from the friction against the knee and hip, it causes pain and affects the thigh. These tendons serve as a connector to muscles and bones. These are flexible and rubber-like tissues that are made with fiber.
The tightening of the iliotibial band is also a cause of irritation and swelling. The band gets intense or tight as the bones rub against each other. High-intensity movements can cause more friction in the bones. These activities include basketball, cycling, running, skiing, and soccer. Some cases cause IT band syndrome due to physical attributes such as bowed legs, one longer leg than the other, knee arthritis, and weak hip, butt, and abdomen muscles.
The pain in the thigh experienced in IT band syndrome is due to the soreness of the iliotibial band that runs from the hip to the outside of the thigh. This tendon works to provide stability to the thigh muscle. As it weakens, it malfunctions and causes severe pain in the thigh. It can hinder daily functions such as walking, running, and standing.
