Previous Vein Surgeries
Vein surgeries are a common treatment for varicose veins, but they’re not always successful. Sometimes, the vein valves that prevent blood from pooling in the veins don’t work properly and cause blood to pool in the veins instead. This occurs in the spider veins, often found near the surgical incision, and can be very painful because of their location. They happen because the valve that causes blood to go back up towards the heart doesn’t close properly after surgery, which allows gravity to force the blood down into the lower part of your legs. Once there, it can’t get back up again. This leads to swelling and pain.
If you’re considering vein surgery and you’ve had this issue before, it’s important to discuss it with your doctor and ask them about how they’ll avoid this complication before moving forward with surgery. If you already had vein surgery but have developed these spider veins, it’s important to remember that there’s no easy way to treat them—they require either another vein surgery or a cosmetic procedure such as sclerotherapy or laser ablation.
