Teeth Grinding
Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is the condition where individuals unconsciously clench, gnash, or grind their teeth during their waking hours or when they’re asleep. When people grind their teeth when they’re awake, they suffer from awake bruxism. However, when they manifest the condition when they’re asleep, they have what health experts call sleep bruxism.
Anyone can be affected by the condition, but according to research, people with high stress levels, sleep problems, and those who take certain medications are more susceptible to bruxism. In addition, the condition can cause several oral problems. People who suffer from bruxism can have flattened, chipped, or broken teeth. They will also have highly sensitive teeth with worn tooth enamel that can expose the deeper layers of the teeth. Over time, their gums may recede because of the constant grinding motion and pain accompanying the condition.
Health experts believe that people who have family members with bruxism, those with high stress and anxiety levels, and those who use illegal substances and certain medications can develop bruxism. Among the possible treatments that can prevent receding gums include using teeth splints and mouth guards, Botox treatments, biofeedback, muscle relaxants, and dental correction surgery.
