Liver Disease
The liver is responsible for many functions in the body, one of which is removing toxins from the bloodstream. When the liver is not functioning correctly, these toxins can build up in the bloodstream and cause pitting edema. In addition, liver disease can also lead to increased capillary permeability, which can also cause pitting edema.
Two main types of liver disease can lead to pitting edema- cirrhosis and fatty liver disease. Cirrhosis is a chronic, progressive disease that slowly damages the liver over time. This damage can eventually lead to organ failure. Fatty liver disease, on the other hand, is a build-up of fat in the liver that can ultimately lead to inflammation and scarring. Both diseases can cause pitting edema.
A few treatment options are available to liver disease patients exhibiting pitting edema. One option is diuretics. Diuretics are medications that help the body get rid of excess fluid by increasing urine production. They can be taken orally or injected directly into a vein. Another option is compression therapy, which involves wearing special stockings or socks that apply gentle pressure to the legs and help reduce swelling.
