Pinworms are small, parasitic worms that can live in the human intestine for extended periods. These worms are typically harmless and do not cause any serious health problems. However, in some cases, pinworms can migrate from the intestine and travel to other parts of the body, including the appendix. When this happens, it can lead to appendicitis, a serious condition requiring immediate medical attention.
The exact mechanism is not fully understood, but it is believed that the pinworms irritate the lining of the appendix, which leads to inflammation. This inflammation can sometimes become severe enough to rupture the appendix, a life-threatening condition.
There are several treatment options for appendicitis, but surgery to remove the inflamed appendix is the most common. This procedure is called an appendectomy. Most people with appendicitis require hospitalization and surgery to remove the appendix. Recovery from appendectomy generally takes about two weeks. During this time, it is important to rest and avoid strenuous activity. You may also be prescribed antibiotics to help prevent infection.
