Topical Antibiotics
Topical antibiotics are medications that are used to prevent and treat different bacterial infections on the mucous membranes and the skin. These antibiotics can either be available as over-the-counter medication or might need a doctor’s prescription before being fulfilled by a pharmacist.
Topical antibiotics are specifically formulated medications designed to cure bacterial skin infections. These medications are not the same as antiseptics but are somewhat related to the substances. Antimicrobials are used to slow or kill bacteria and other pathogens, such as mites, fungi, and parasites, growing on the infection site. Meanwhile, antiseptics are used to deter the growth of bacteria, while antibiotics are used to target specific bacteria.
Different preparations for topical antibiotics depend on the areas of the body affected by the conditions doctors wish to treat. These medications can be in the form of emollient creams, ointments, lotions, foams, or cleansers. Individuals using topical antibiotics must clean and dry the affected areas before applying the creams or ointments as directed. Then, patients must repeat the procedure three times daily or as directed by their doctors.
