Improves Sleep
Magnesium is a natural muscle relaxant that can help someone fall asleep. Some studies have shown that magnesium can significantly improve sleep quality, reduce the number of times of waking up throughout the night and increase overall sleep time. One study found that participants receiving magnesium supplements had less anxiety and lower stress levels during episodes of REM sleep, the stage in which dreaming occurs. If a person struggles with insomnia or has problems falling asleep at night, consider taking a magnesium supplement before bedtime.
Magnesium may also benefit people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to research published in The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine in 2014. Researchers found that oral magnesium supplementation significantly improved blood oxygen levels compared to placebo treatment among patients with OSA. The latter were given supplemental doses between 500 mg–1 g per day over six months.
