Avoid Peanuts and Almonds
One way to reduce your risk of developing varicose veins is to avoid peanuts and almonds. The ingredient in these foods that can cause problems is called phytate—it’s one of several types of compounds known as phytates. Phytates naturally occur in foods like grains, beans, and nuts, but the phytate in peanuts and almonds can block your absorption of iron.
Without enough iron in your blood, your body will not produce enough red blood cells to provide oxygen to all your tissues, including the veins in your legs. When this happens, those tissues become starved for oxygen and break down. They try to rebuild themselves using whatever nutrients they have available. The result is a lot more collagen in your veins, making them look larger than they should be.
