Hydrogen Peroxide
Another natural bleaching agent that patients can use to whiten their teeth is hydrogen peroxide. As mentioned above, hydrogen peroxide works best when mixed with baking soda. However, it can also stand on its own.
Hydrogen peroxide can kill harmful bacteria and reduce plaque build-up in the oral cavity. As a result, it has been used as an active ingredient for disinfectants and commercial whitening products. For example, a study in 2017 found that toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide is more effective in whitening teeth and lessening cavities.
To use this, dilute hydrogen peroxide in water and use the solution as a mouthwash. Then, spit out the solution and brush your teeth as usual. However, experts remind patients to use heavily diluted hydrogen peroxide. Too much hydrogen peroxide can lead to tooth sensitivity, tongue inflammation, and gum irritation.
