Use a Mandibular Advancement Device
Snoring happens when your tongue falls back and obstructs your airway. A mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a custom-made mouthpiece that holds your lower jaw forward to keep the airway open, relaxing the muscles and reducing snoring.
Mandibular advancement devices work differently than other types of mouthpieces. Unlike a standard mouthpiece that keeps your jaw forward and slightly opens your airway, MADs are designed to move your jaw forward at a certain angle and open your airway. This is done by making impressions of a person’s teeth and then creating a 3D model of their mouth to make the custom fit.
MADs are effective for those who snore due to tongue obstruction and those who snore due to weak muscles in the palate and throat (muscle related). Also, a MAD does not need cleaning, unlike other mouthpieces, because it does not touch the tongue directly. Mandibular advancement devices do not create any build-up over time, except for tooth staining from retained plaque, because they cover most teeth.
