High Cholesterol (Hypercholesterolemia) Symptoms & Signs You Should Know

Impotence and Decreased Sexual Activity

High cholesterol levels create fatty deposits in the arteries, and there is a high possibility that they would create a blockage that wouldn’t let blood pass efficiently. In addition, several studies have stated that among the most common manifestations of high cholesterol is erectile dysfunction which leads to decreased sexual activity. Although erectile dysfunction, impotence, decreased libido, and high cholesterol levels don’t seem connected, medical practitioners say that they are interrelated.

Sexual stimulation in men leads to the body releasing chemicals that make the penile arteries relax. As a result, the arteries dilate, which leads to the corpora cavernosa filling with blood. The action results in the penis elongating and stiffening, which in layman’s terms, is an erection. With high cholesterol levels, there’s a higher chance that the arteries will become clogged. When this happens, the male member wouldn’t respond as efficiently as before. The circulation wouldn’t be enough to make the penis engorge and function accordingly.

While high cholesterol affects libido and testosterone production, the condition can be reversed through medication and lowering the cholesterol levels present in the body.
