Avoid Lying Down After a Meal
The most common mistake when trying to treat their hiatal hernia is lying down after a meal. This can exacerbate symptoms, so it’s best to avoid lying down as soon as finishing eating. If there is a need to lie down, prop up with pillows and ensure thr head is elevated above the chest.
Preferably, wait at least an hour after eating before lying down; if this isn’t possible, try to stay seated for as long as possible before lying down. Sitting or standing upright will help keep food from getting stuck in the opening of the esophagus. Anyone can also prevent hiatal hernias by avoiding heavy lifting and straining while on the toilet. These activities can increase pressure on the abdomen and cause refluxes (or “gastric reflux”).
