Gas
Many people don’t realize that gas can be a sign of gallstones. It’s rare, but the abdomen can become distended with gas, and the pain can radiate down to the back. The gas is caused by the liver trying to digest the stones.
The liver is the organ in charge of getting rid of toxins, so when it’s working hard for no reason, it sends the excess waste to the intestines, producing gas. The gallbladder will also start releasing extra bile to help the liver better digest fat, which can travel through the bile ducts and cause pain.
Gallstones are not just a blockage in the gallbladder. Instead, they can occur anywhere inside the biliary system (a series of tubes that starts from the liver). The stones don’t cause symptoms until they clog up a tube, which may significantly contribute to gas.
