14 Common Causes of Diabetes You Shouldn’t Ignore

Weight

The accumulation of excessive body fat is another risk factor for the development of diabetes, specifically, type 2. Accordingly, the global growth in obesity prevalence may have resulted in the concomitant increase in the widespread presence of the condition. Various measurement forms can evaluate the excess weight, the most common being the method of calculating the body’s mass index or BMI.

When people with predispositions to diabetes carry excess weight, their body’s cells become much less sensitive or numb to the pancreas’ release of insulin. And evidence suggests fat cells to be much more resistant than the body’s muscle cells. People affected by the disease who engage in regular physical activity appear to minimize the severity of insulin resistance because the muscles that exercise uses up the excess glucose in your blood; thus, the body won’t secrete insulin. The sugar also won’t be diverted to the excess cells of fat.

It’s worth noting that it’s not only the weight but where it’s carried that may put them at much greater risk for various health problems, including but not necessarily limited to diabetes. For example, those with morbid obesity and excessive weight are at a greater risk of developing diabetic conditions.
